Solid Oak tables
Many premium brands are committed to using natural materials, it is a part of their identity. Solid Oak was the first material used for the Ygg&Lyng dining table design. A solid oak table is a type of furniture that is made from a single piece of oak wood. Oak is known for its durability and strength, making it a popular choice for tables and other pieces of furniture. Solid oak tables are often characterized by their natural wood grain and warm, golden color, which can add a touch of elegance and charm to any room. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, solid oak tables are also highly functional and can withstand daily use without showing signs of wear and tear. Over the last few years, the changes due to the pandemic and its impact on the entire supply chain made it difficult to find raw materials for many businesses. Despite these challenges, Ygg&Lyng pivoted to find new solutions to provide high-quality furniture. In their recent blog post "A new path" the brand expressed how they researched for new ways and decided to choose premium oak veneer for their table production: "Our table designs require long, thick lengths of solid oak and that’s been especially difficult to obtain locally and of the quality we want. Adding up the environmental impacts of longer travel way for raw material, as well as the different color and look of the available oak, we had to take action and find more sustainable ways to utilize the wood."
Premium Oak Veneer
Premium oak veneers are made from thin slices of oak, which gives furniture a solid oak appearance. This technique makes products resistant to bending and cracking. In the past, veneer had a poor reputation due to its widespread use in low-quality furniture. However, veneer has come a long way since then the materials, glue, and techniques used to create veneer furniture have been significantly developed and improved over time. The veneers used for this product are thick 1.5 mm, which makes them durable and long-lasting. Veneer cuttings are mixed - radial and tangent to get the real oak-looking experience. Perfect 60mm width oak veneer pieces are selected and matched with edges. "Now result in furniture that looks and feels exactly like a solid wood piece. Edges and matching of the veneer sheets can give away the fact that it’s not solid wood all the way through the top if it’s not done with care and precision." - Ygg&Lyng.
Oak veneer is more stable and durable than solid oak. Solid wood is a living material that expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity, which can cause it to warp and crack over time. Oak veneer, on the other hand, is less susceptible to these changes because it is bonded to a stable core material. This means that it will retain its shape and appearance longer than solid oak, making it a more reliable choice for high-quality furniture.
In conclusion, oak veneer offers many benefits over solid oak furniture. It is more stable, durable, and sustainable, making it a great choice for anyone looking for high-quality, beautiful furniture. Today, veneer furniture can look and feel just like a solid wood piece.
